Raising Chickens in TX Heat: Shelter and Summer Survival Tips
July 15, 2025Predator-Proofing Your Shelter 🦊🔒
When you live in the country or raise animals on open land, predators aren’t just a possibility — they’re a guarantee. Raccoons, foxes, hawks, coyotes, and stray dogs are all known to target vulnerable livestock, especially chickens, goats, and young animals. That’s why predator-proofing your shelter isn’t optional. It’s your first line of defense in protecting your animals and your investment.
At Wolf Valley Buildings, we’ve helped hundreds of customers design livestock shelters with built-in predator protection. Whether you’re new to animal care or upgrading an older setup, these tips can help you feel more secure — and give your animals the safety they deserve.
Know Your Enemy: Common Rural Predators 🐍🦝
Different regions in Texas and the South have different threats, but most rural homesteads deal with a combination of night-hunters (like raccoons and coyotes), aerial predators (like hawks and owls), and ground diggers (like skunks and snakes). One weak point in your shelter can become an open invitation to these opportunistic hunters.
Predator-proofing your shelter begins by understanding which animals you’re defending against — and how they typically get in. If you’ve already lost livestock, examine the attack site to learn what you’re dealing with.
Strong Floors and Secure Skirting 🛠️
Digging predators like foxes and skunks can easily tunnel under a structure that lacks a solid foundation. To stop this, we recommend elevating your shelter on skids or building it on a gravel pad with a perimeter barrier. Adding welded wire or hardware cloth around the base, buried 6–12 inches into the ground, creates a simple but effective deterrent.
You can also choose a shelter with a built-in floor — available in many of our chicken coops and animal shelters — to stop burrowers completely.
Lock It Up: Doors and Latches That Work 🔐
It’s surprising how many animals learn to open simple latches. Raccoons, in particular, have clever little hands and are notorious for pulling open slide bolts or turning knobs. For true protection, you’ll want to use predator-proof locks such as carabiner clips, barrel bolts with locks, or spring-loaded latches that require more than a paw or beak to open.
Also check for loose hinges or gaps between doors and frames. Even a one-inch opening can allow snakes or small predators to slip through.
Use the Right Wire — Not Chicken Wire 🧱
Here’s a myth: chicken wire keeps chickens in, but it doesn’t keep predators out. It’s too flimsy and easy to tear through. For predator-proofing your shelter, always use ¼” or ½” hardware cloth — not chicken wire — especially on windows, vents, and run fencing.
Install hardware cloth securely with staples and washers to prevent tugging, and double-layer vulnerable areas like corners and roof joints if hawks or raccoons are a concern.
Roof and Airborne Defense 🦅
Predator attacks don’t just come from the ground. Owls and hawks can swoop into open-top pens and disappear with a chicken in seconds. Covering your run or shelter openings with netting or solid roofs is a must. If you have goats or rabbits in outdoor pens, a covered shelter is the best option to keep them safe overnight.
Many of our custom animal shelters at Wolf Valley come with covered entries or overhangs, reducing exposure while still providing airflow.
A Smart Shelter Is Your Best Ally 🧠🏡
Ultimately, predator-proofing your shelter is about being proactive. Every detail matters — from the type of door latch to the materials you use on the roof. Our custom shelters are built with these things in mind. When you start with a design that accounts for both animals and their predators, you set yourself up for long-term success.
Whether you’re raising poultry, goats, or other livestock, we’ll help you build a structure that guards your animals day and night — so you can sleep peacefully, knowing they’re safe.
